Joint replacement surgery gives Marguerite a new lease on life

Marguerite Manshreck-Head, 74, has always been active, riding horses and playing squash and tennis. But the Markham senior, who has arthritis, realized she needed to seek care when she began experiencing pain in her knee and shoulder.

Marguerite’s family doctor referred her to Oak Valley Health’s Orthopaedic and Joint Assessment Centre (OJAC). Located at Markham Stouffville Hospital, OJAC assesses whether a patient is a candidate for surgery on the hip and knee, lower back/spine, shoulder, foot, and ankle.

Human Resources

Members of our Human Resources team

Over the past three years, Oak Valley Health has faced many challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has taken a toll on our dedicated staff, physicians, midwives, and volunteers. Like other hospitals across Canada, we are experiencing a critical health care worker shortage.

To address these concerns, and to preserve our “honoured to care culture,” the organization launched Oak Valley Health’s People Plan 2023-2026 in March 2023. The plan is a roadmap to help us put in place the right tactics, programs, investments, and supports to ensure Oak Valley Health is an employer of choice. Over the past year, we have made significant progress in each of the plan’s three areas.

When Carol Goddard moved to Ontario from British Columbia, she did not have a family doctor. Fortunately, Carol’s daughter-in-law told her about the Community Health Clinic (CHC), located in Stouffville, which provides care for patients without access to a primary care provider.

Oak Valley Health, in partnership with Eastern York Region North Durham Ontario Health Team (EYRND OHT) and Well Plus Compounding Pharmacy, opened the CHC in May 2023.

It provides virtual care, as well as in-person care. The CHC offers same and next-day appointments for all patients six months of age and older seeking care for urgent, but not emergency, health concerns.

Carol Goddard, patient

Having access to the Community Health Clinic was helpful, because I really needed a safety net. I have mental health issues and moving from one province to another was trying. It’s very different from any other health care experience I’ve had. The clinic is special. It’s been fantastic.
